This is the one people come to us for. Six feet by six feet of hand-woven hazel drops into the same footprint as a standard fence panel — post for post, gap for gap — and changes the boundary completely. It looks like part of the landscape from the day it goes up, and better every year after.

The colour is the first thing people remark on. Hazel is a soft silvery grey-brown, with olive and honey running through the rods where the bark has weathered, and it pales gently as the seasons work on it. It is a colour that recedes, which is why garden designers reach for it: put green planting in front of a hazel hurdle and the planting is what you see. If you want the opposite — a fence that brings colour rather than stepping back — our willow hurdles are a deep red-brown.

At 180cm you get genuine, standing-height privacy: a footpath, a road or a neighbour’s upstairs window closed off with texture rather than a blank face. The weave catches light through the day in a way flat timber never does, so the boundary reads as depth. A garden enclosed in hazel feels larger than the same garden enclosed in board.

Why a hurdle beats a solid panel in wind

It is the practical choice on an exposed site, which surprises people. A solid six-foot fence is a sail. It takes the full force of a gale, and either the panel goes or the post snaps. Worse, the wind that does clear the top drops in a hard swirl a few feet in, flattening whatever you planted for shelter.

A woven hurdle filters instead. The gust passes through and is broken up, the panel carries a fraction of the load, and the border behind it comes through the winter looking well. Growers have used hurdles as windbreaks for centuries for exactly this reason.

How it is made

Every panel is woven by hand from coppiced hazel — cut in winter when the sap is down, split down the rod, and worked green around upright sails so the finished hurdle holds its own tension. Nothing is nailed. The wood does the work. See our full range of hazel hurdles in six heights from 1ft to 6ft.

Fitting. Full height needs 2.4m pointed UC4 posts set at least 60cm down, concreted if the ground is soft or the site is open. A six-foot boundary catches real weather, and while the weave sheds most of it, whatever load remains goes into the post at ground level.

One post per 6ft plus one to finish. Eight stainless steel cable ties per panel, four to each upright. Photographs of the whole run in our fitting guide.
