Four feet is the height at which a hurdle changes job. Below it you are marking a boundary; at 120cm you are making a place. Sit down on a bench behind one of these and the world on the other side politely disappears — then stand up and the whole garden is yours again.
It is the height most people want for the part of the garden they actually use. Around a patio or a firepit it takes the edge off the wind and the sightlines at once. Along an exposed boundary it shelters a border without creating the frost pocket and hard downdraught a solid fence produces. Round a chicken run or a dog yard it is tall enough to be taken seriously. And in a long thin garden, a run of hazel at this height across the width breaks the space into two rooms and makes the whole plot feel bigger — a trick solid fencing cannot manage.
Hazel is a soft silvery grey-brown, olive and honey through the rods, paling as the seasons work on it. It is a colour that recedes. If you want the boundary to read as a colour in its own right, our willow hurdles are a deep red-brown.
Fitting at this height
Four feet is the last height that takes the shorter post. Above it, step up to the 2.4m. Panels fix to the face of a round post rather than slotting in, so a run can follow a curve or a slope with no cutting at all — see the full hazel range and the fitting guide.
Fitting. Four feet is the tallest panel the shorter post will carry. Use 1.8m pointed UC4 posts with a good 60cm in the ground, one at each end and at every 6ft join; concrete them on soft or exposed sites, where a four-foot panel starts to catch real wind.
Eight stainless steel cable ties per panel, four to each upright, pulled tight so the weave cannot work against the post.
